Our mares are current on all essential vaccinations and de-worming and get plenty of exercise. This ensures safe and stress-free foaling and nursing. Each foal is checked at birth, given a vitamin E/selenium injection, and then left to bond with its mother for a day. Once both mare and foal are rested and ready, they go straight to arena or pasture to try out the new limbs. Each foal is de-wormed at one week and every four weeks thereafter until age 1 to 1½ when they go on our eight-week "adult" program. Vaccinations begin at two months and weaning is usually between months three and four. Though most of Moonlit Meadows’ foals are halter quality, we do not push them on feed or additives. They are allowed to grow at their own pace on hay and grain. Being outside, they also acquire their share of scrapes, bumps, and bruises. This is all part of growing up. |
